F-18 Hornet

The F/A-18 Hornet is an American twin-engine, carrier-capable multirole combat aircraft built by McDonnell Douglas with Northrop, developed from the YF-17 after that design lost the US Air Force's lightweight fighter contest to the F-16. It entered service in 1983 and first saw combat against Libya in 1986, followed by the 1991 Gulf War. Canada, Australia, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Kuwait and Malaysia also bought it. The larger F/A-18E/F Super Hornet grew out of the design, and the US Navy retired its last Hornets in 2019, while the Marine Corps still flies them.
