Historical information
Andrea Doria (D 553) is an air-defense destroyer of the Italian Navy, commissioned in 2007. It is the first of Italy's two Horizon-class (Orizzonte in Italian) ships, a class developed jointly with France. The French Navy operates the other two, including Forbin. Andrea Doria is armed mainly with Aster surface-to-air missiles. It has taken part in anti-piracy operations off Somalia. The ship is named after Andrea Doria, a 16th-century admiral from Genoa.
