Historical information
USS South Dakota (BB-57) was a battleship of the United States Navy and the lead ship of the South Dakota-class. Commissioned in 1942, it served mainly in the Pacific during World War II. At the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, it was hit more than two dozen times by Japanese warships but was not in danger of sinking. For security reasons, the Navy referred to it as "Battleship X". The ship was decommissioned in 1947 and sold for scrap in 1962.
