The proposed modernization of the Project 1164 Atlant missile cruiser involves a complete replacement of the ship's equipment and weapons systems. In the 1990s, negotiations were held to purchase an unfinished ship of this class as a platform for installing experimental weapons. However, in the end, the Project 956 Sovremenny ship was purchased instead.
