The Giuseppe Garibaldi (C 551) was the first aircraft carrier to enter service with the Italian Navy (Marina Militare). It was commissioned in 1985 and retired in 2024. Due to legal restrictions at the time, it was officially classified as an aircraft-carrying cruiser (incrociatore portaeromobili) rather than an aircraft carrier. In 2026 the ship was transferred to the Indonesian Navy, which will name it KRI Sriwijaya and modernize it.
