Pyotr Velikiy is the fourth and last completed of the Kirov-class (Project 1144 Orlan) nuclear-powered missile cruisers of the Russian Navy, ships so large that they are often called battlecruisers. Laid down as Yuri Andropov, it was commissioned in 1998 and became the flagship of the Northern Fleet. It has been laid up since 2022, and Russia may retire it once its sister ship Admiral Nakhimov returns from modernization, because a similar refit would be too expensive, though no decision has been announced.
