JS Ashigara (DDG-178) is the second of two Atago-class guided-missile destroyers of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and is named after Mount Ashigara. It was the first Japanese warship to carry the prefix JS (Japanese Ship) rather than the older JDS (Japanese Defense Ship). Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, it was commissioned in 2008. It remains in service and took part in relief operations after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.
