JS Takanami (DD-110) leads the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) Takanami-class of destroyers. The name means "high wave". The class is a modified version of the Murasame class with a larger 127 mm gun, and Takanami itself was built by IHI Marine United at Uraga in Kanagawa. It was commissioned in 2003 and has since served on anti-piracy patrols off Somalia and in relief work after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.
