The October update is named Rogue Shades v0.72 and it brings major changes and additions to Modern Warships. The update will likely please free-to-play players because it brings a lot of content that is accessible to all players in the in-game store. In this article, you will find everything new in the update. If you see a ship, aircraft, or weapon you are especially interested in, you can click the card to view its detailed statistics.
New map
A new map called Monstrous Maelstrom has been added to the game. This is a large map with a snowy winter theme. However, the layout is kind of weird and not very well-optimized for TDM gameplay. In the bottom part of the map, there’s a very large enclosure accessible only from the center of the map since access to it from the bottom has been blocked by an indestructible bridge. It seems like there’s very little reason to go to this area as it does not feature any points of interest from a gameplay perspective. Maybe this layout will make more sense if the Domination game mode is brought back in the future?

New game mechanics
Anti-submarine missiles
The anti-submarine missiles have been reworked in this update. In the past, these missiles have been simply normal missiles capable of diving underwater which is not the most realistic way to depict them. Now, anti-submarine missiles have two stages just like in real life. The missile first accelerates over its target. Then a small torpedo or depth charge detaches from the missile and falls down. Finally, the torpedo homes towards its target, usually an underwater submarine but it can be also a surface ship. This change makes the anti-submarine missiles more realistic.
The changed missiles are RUM-139 Swarmer, Type-07 SUM and YU-8. In addition to changes to the missiles, the developer also introduced three new anti-submarine launchers, more on these a bit later on.
Torpedo countermeasures
To help combat these new anti-submarine threats, submarines are equipped with a new consumable called “torpedo countermeasures”. This consumable allows a submarine to launch anti-torpedo traps which cause enemy torpedoes to lose their seeking. However, there is only a limited amount of these consumables in a battle and they have a long cooldown period. You can purchase these consumables in the in-game shop just like repair kits and missile countermeasures.
New user interface
The user interface of the game has seen an overhaul. It features bright blue colors and boxy designs that have been divisive among the community. A new filter system has been added which makes it easier to browse your ships by country and ship class. Maybe the next thing the devs could add is a feature to add a ship to your favorites so you could find your most played ships even easier?

Ships
RF Admiral Basisty
This Russian ship could be best thought of as a premium version of RF Admiral Ushakov. It retains the twin cannons and powerful air defense but it’s enhanced with powerful locked modules and gains an extra grenade launcher slot. The locked modules are the TE-2-03 torpedo system that can pump out a lot of damage due to its fast reload and the 3K95 Kinzhal air defense missile (no relation to the Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missile, this air defense is based on the Buk system). This ship can be obtained for free if you complete the October Battle Pass.
INS Visakhapatnam (D66)
The Visakhapatnam is the second Indian ship in the game and the first in tier III as the INS Chennai is limited to tier II. This multipurpose ship is armed with a wide variety of armaments, including three missile slots, a cannon, grenade launchers, and an exclusive Varunastra torpedo that can deliver a lot of damage in a single shot. The air defense is also pretty good with a total of five slots that can be freely changed and an Israeli Barak 8 missile in a locked slot. Best of all, this ship can be purchased in the in-game shop, provided that you have 55 000 000 in-game dollars to spare and you are at least a level 25 player.
KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata (331)
This is not really a new ship since it was added in a bundle during September. However, like the developers promised earlier, this ship can now be purchased using in-game gold rather than real money only. The price is 5 000 gold bars.
Camouflages
The update includes two new Halloween-themed camouflages that can be obtained through the Battle Pass.
Sinister Night
This animated camouflage features cute animal characters that transform into terrifying monsters. It might be a reference to “Five Nights at Freddy’s” but I’m probably too old to understand the reference. This camo is a VIP Battle Pass reward.
Spider Web
This animated camo features creepy spiders that crawl all over your ship. It’s a Premium Battle Pass reward.
Aircraft
MH-47N Chinook
This American transport helicopter has been modified so it acts as a gunship and ASW platform. It’s armed with two different types of guns and torpedoes. It’s a versatile helicopter that can attack surface, air, and submerged targets. While it has a decent amount of health, it’s a bit slow. VIP battle pass reward.
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet
There’s already a Hornet in the game, in the form of the tier II fighter F-18 Hornet. However, this is the upgraded tier III version which acts as a strike fighter. It is armed with a Vulcan cannon, missiles, and guided bombs. You need a VIP Battle Pass to get it.
Fun fact: our local Finnish Air Force had a competition a few years ago to replace their F-18 fleet. The Super Hornet was one of the options, along with Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, and the F-35. However, in the end, the winner was the F-35.
Skat
This Russian drone joins MQ-9 Reaper in tier II. It’s faster and more maneuverable than its alternative, but the only ships you would want to put it are HMS Queen Elizabeth and USS Nimitz (CVN-68). Maybe the developers are planning on adding a Russian tier II ship with drone capability in the future? This drone is a shop item.
Weapons
Ikara (324mm)
The Australian Ikara is an anti-submarine launcher that fires a gliding torpedo to destroy surface and underwater targets. It can be purchased in the in-game shop.
RPK-1 Vikhr
This Russian anti-submarine launches two nuclear bombs at enemy targets. It has high damage and a large explosion radius. This weapon is a VIP Battle Pass item.
Malafon (533mm)
This French system is a tier II anti-submarine launcher. It works just like the two previous ones but deals less damage than its tier III counterparts. This weapon system can be purchased in the in-game shop.
SMART (324mm)
This is the first anti-submarine missile in tier II. Like its tier III counterparts Swarmer, YU-8, and Type-07 SUM, it launches a missile that breaks apart in flight and drops a torpedo. Available for purchase in the in-game shop.
Avatars
Four new player avatars have been added to the game. They can be obtained through the Battle Pass.
Samuel Evans (Premium Battle Pass)
Jason Ortega (Free Battle Pass)
Boris Yanetskiy (Premium Battle Pass)
Fedor Bodrov (Free Battle Pass)
